OTTAWA—Canada plans to strike back against the United States with $3.6 billion of tariffs on a range of goods, after President Donald Trump revived a North American trade spat by announcing his government would slap import taxes on Canadian aluminum. Canada will now take 30 days to consult with the public on a quickly-released list of American imports it plans to tax in response, Freeland said. The move by the Trump administration comes after weeks of speculation and discussion over the possibility that the U.S. would impose tariffs again on Canadian aluminum. At the time, Canada responded with almost $17 billion in tariffs on American goods largely from areas with Republican representation, including on ketchup, orange juice, whiskies and much more. On Thursday, Trump justified the latest tariffs by stating that Canadian aluminum imports to the U.S. have surged since the previous taxes were lifted in May 2019.
