Can employers have a say in what you wear to work?


The decision was made after Māori Party co-leader Rawiri Waititi was expelled from the House for wearing a hei tiki and refusing to wear a tie. Mika said the benefit of having an inclusive workplace was that it reflected the changing face of New Zealand. Webby said it was not fair nor reasonable for employers to ask female staff to wear makeup if they did not work in the beauty industry and wearing makeup did not directly influence their jobs. Webby said if there was an expectation for staff to wear uniforms it should be mentioned in the employment contract. But if employers wanted to introduce uniforms or certain types of attire they needed to give lawful and reasonable instruction.
