Calgary police charge civilian employee on 9 counts connected to breach of privacy

Calgary police arrested one of its employees on Tuesday and have charged her with allegedly accessing police databases for non-police matters. Police charged a civilian member of the Calgary Police Service (CPS) with nine counts under the Protection of Privacy Act for collecting, using or disclosing information in contravention of the act, and gaining or attempting to gain access to personal information also in contravention of the act. Police said in a press release Thursday they believe the employee accessed police databases, seeking protected information on people she had or sought to have personal relationships with. The CPS Sensitive Investigations Unit was first notified in December about allegations that protected information was accessed. The civilian, who has worked for CPS for several years, is currently on an unrelated leave from the service, pending review, police said.
