Regarding “Notable & Quotable: ‘Beach’” (Sept. 26): California State Long Beach finally is moving on from its mascot Prospector Pete, an offensive symbol of the 1849 California Gold Rush when indigenous peoples of California endured subjugation, violence and threats of genocide. However, merely expunging Prospector Pete seems like a token atonement for all that is wrong with Cal State Long Beach’s sordid history of honoring exploiters.
