Empty Dee St, Invercargill, on the first day of lock down in Southland. Southland small businesses felt a little blind sided by the Government announcing the country was going back into lock down. Black Shag Café co-owners Sylvie Boutelje-Chasteau and Dion Milanesi said this lockdown crept up on them more, compared to the last one in 2020. Another Invercargill cafe, The Batch Cafe co-owner Kate Fench said it was a bit different this time around, as last year there was a 24-hour notice. While, the lodge had to cancel events and there would be a financial loss, there would be no food wastage, she said.
