Cabinet clears new anti-dowry law with jail term, fines for pressing false charges

The draft of the new “Dowry Prohibition Act 2018” was approved in Monday’s cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the Secretariat. Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam told reporters after the meeting that a new provision was added to the draft law that says a person may face up to five years of imprisonment or Tk 500,000 fines or both for pressing false dowry charges. There was no punishment for such offence in the Dowry Prohibition Act of 1980. In the old law, the punishment for demanding, giving or receiving dowry was minimum one year prison term and maximum five years in jail or up to Tk 5,000 fines or both. The cabinet secretary said the new law proposed up to Tk 50,000 fines for demanding, giving or receiving dowry.
