more-inOverruling objections raised by the State Paddy and Wetland Monitoring Committee against the reclamation of paddy land for the waste-to-energy plant at Brahmapuram, the State government has given consent for land conversion. The Brahmapuram plant was one among the five projects that the government had exempted from the ambit of the Kerala Paddy and Wetland Act 2008. The State Level Monitoring Committee on Kerala Conservation of Paddy Land and Wetlands Act had earlier rejected a proposal for reclamation citing its ecological impacts. The delay in obtaining land on the Brahmapuram campus was sited as a major stumbling block in the implementation of the project. While objecting to the conversion of paddy fields, the panel suggested that the 15-acre dry land in the possession of the civic body at Brahmapuram might be used for the purpose.
