Brexiteers have rejected the customs partnership, claiming it would keep the UK too closely tied to Brussels and May’s inner war cabinet is thought to have lined up six-five against it, despite the Prime Minister and Clark backing the model. Tory MP Jacob Rees-Mogg noted how “Project Fear” was “thoroughly discredited” after the 2016 referendum and a Cabinet source suggested the minister appeared to be “re-fighting the referendum, this is Project Fear 3.0”. Greg Clark, the Business Secretary who backed Remain, said the controversial “customs partnership” plan was still on the table as he warned the UK economy would be hit if there was no agreement on frictionless trade with Europe. A Cabinet minister has been accused of reviving ‘Project Fear’ after warning thousands of British jobs are at risk if the UK fails to agree a post-Brexit customs deal with the EU. But in a sign of the divisions at the top of Government, a Cabinet source said: “Greg appears to be re-fighting the referendum, this is Project Fear 3.0.
