Theresa May faced jeers in the Commons as she announced a delay in the vote on her withdrawal agreement ReutersTheresa May abandoned attempts to get her Brexit deal through parliament tomorrow, pledging to go back to Brussels and seek further “reassurances” on the Northern Ireland backstop. To jeers from MPs, the prime minister said she would defer the vote after accepting the “widespread and deep concern” about the deal in the Commons. She pointedly failed to commit the government to renegotiating the withdrawal agreement, telling MPs that she still believed it was the “best deal negotiable”. Instead, in a move that makes a leadership challenge more likely, Mrs May merely committed herself to seeking “additional reassurance on the backstop”. She said that “nothing was off the table” and that she would be looking at a range of ways to find “sufficient” reassurance.
