Breaststroke swim a success but an excruciating feat


Long distance swim guru Philip Rush greets Michael Wells as he emerges from the lake just before midnight on Sunday. Australian architect Michael Wells has successfully breaststroked the 40.2 km length of Lake Taupō - becoming the first swimmer to use the style to do it. CHRIS MARSHALL/STUFF Wells being congratulated by his son, Arlow, after completing the swim. As well as the obvious physical challenge, the swim had been an exercise in mental control. By the end of the swim, Wells had raised about $15,000 for respective breast cancer foundations in New Zealand and Australia.
