Even theater fans might not readily grasp what a theater service organization such as Theatre Bay Area does, since it doesn’t make art itself, but its inside-baseball role doesn’t mean its influence isn’t huge. Erickson likens TBA to a chamber of commerce for the region’s theater, but one that serves both companies and artists. As executive director, Erickson has been the local industry’s de facto spokesperson, and his departure means a new leader has the chance to reshape how local theater presents itself and what its priorities are. (Full disclosure: I worked at Theatre Bay Area from 2013 to 2015.) Theatre Bay Area plans to select Erickson’s successor by early 2022, with hopes of announcing a national executive search firm soon.
