Illumination and UniversalUniversal/Comcast Corp. and Illumination’s Despicable Me 3 earned $99.3 million over its Fri-Tues debut over the Fourth of July weekend. The only worrying stat is that the Fri-Sun figure is less, when adjusted for inflation, than the $70m Fri-Sun debut of The Lorax back in 2012. That would give Despicable Me 3 a $226m domestic total, or just under 3x its alleged production budget. A run like The Secret Life of Pets ($104m Fri-Sun/$131m Fri-Tues for a $368m total) would put Despicable Me 3 between $255m and $270m. So, at a glance, we’re probably looking at a $250-$270m domestic total for Despicable Me 3.
