Borrowed belts, off-duty police thwart $28,000 Wellington jewellery theft

A would-be Wellington jewellery thief has been thwarted by a couple of high-profile off-duty police figures and a pair of borrowed belts. But it livened up quickly as they made their way past a Lambton Quay jewellery store. John Cowpland/Stuff Deputy Commissioner Tania Kura helped apprehend a would be jewellery thief while off duty on Saturday. She said an off-duty Police staff member had helped in the countdown stabbing in Dunedin last week. And in another Wellington incident involving an off-duty officer, the break-up of a May 8 brawl on Courtenay Pl has led to the arrest of two men.
