Emily Branje, 9, died after being swept out to sea at Hokitika in 2019. The tragic drowning of a 9-year-old girl on the West Coast may have been prevented if she had been wearing a life jacket, a coroner has found. She avoided making any direct recommendations, but said Emily “would have had a chance of survival” if she had been wearing a life jacket.
