Boroffice links low GDP to poor research funding

Everest Amaefule, AbujaThe Chairman, Senate Committee on Science and Technology, Prof. Robert Boroffice, has attributed Nigeria and other African countries’ low Gross Domestic Product to poor funding of research in science, technology and innovation. He stated, “It is worrisome to note that Africa accounts for about five per cent of the global GDP. The continent is responsible for only 1.3 per cent of the global expenditure on research and development. “It should also be noted that only about 0.45 per cent of Africa’s GDP is expended on research and development. The repositioning of STI will assuredly enhance the actualisation of sustainable development in Africa.
