A “bomb cyclone” is pummelling the Atlantic coast of America, delivering the worst storm for decades. Storm Grayson is devastating the eastern seaboard with heavy snowfall and high winds after wreaking havoc from New Hampshire — where wind-chill temperatures of minus 70C were recorded — to Georgia. More than a million children missed school and about 5,000 flights were cancelled as the storm spread from Florida to Nova Scotia. The expansive phenomenon is termed a “bomb” because the sudden drop in atmospheric pressure brings a steep fall in temperature. The right conditions for the cyclone were created when warm air from the sea met cold polar air blowing over the east coast this week.
