Black Americans’ role in this country, they insist, is to be America’s perpetual accuser, forever reminding the country of its failures. One year ago, this week, a group of Black Americans stood together to reject this play list. We rejected the idea that the only service Black Americans can provide for our country is as prophets of despair. I believe from the bottom of my heart that America belongs to Black Americans as much as it belongs to anyone else. Therein lies the real moral authority of Black America today.
