BlackBerry bets on Kanata, pledging 800 new jobs

BlackBerry and the federal government are expected to announce a major investment in autonomous vehicle technology in Ottawa's Kanata neighbourhood, one expected to create some 800 jobs, according to a government source. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to announce the approximately $340 million in new funding this morning at the BlackBerry campus in Kanata. "There's already a wonderful cluster of AV [autonomous vehicle] related activities in Kanata North and this is further evidence that this is a very significant cluster." Canadian winter-specificRichard Yu, a professor at Carleton University's school of information technology, has been collaborating with BlackBerry QNX to develop and test autonomous vehicles. BlackBerry subsidiary QNX opened its testing hub for autonomous vehicles in Kanata in late 2016.
