Black-owned merchants seek $2 million in racial claim against Tiburon police


Two Black merchants who allege racial profiling by police in Tiburon and Belvedere are demanding $2 million from the municipalities. Yema Khalif and Hawi Awash, owners of the Yema clothing shop in Tiburon, filed the claims on Monday. They are seeking $1 million each for alleged emotional distress and potential loss of revenue, as well as punitive damages. Michael Blasi and Officer Isaac Madfes of the Tiburon Police Department and Officer Jeremy Clark of the Belvedere Police Department. Tiburon’s town attorney declined to comment on the claim Monday, and Belvedere’s could not be reached for comment.
