In a few days, Kenyans will be watching a new movie called Black Panther, in which three of Africa’s leading actors in Hollywood will appear: Daniel Kaluuya from Uganda/UK, Danai Gurrira from Zimbabwe/US and Lupita Nyong’o from Kenya/Mexico. Many have described Black Panther as an American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character by the same name. There is more to this action-packed movie that one can only discern by reflecting on the messages that the actors keep on passing. The question is: Why did Coogler, the director of the movie, find it useful to discuss these issues through the vehicle of a film like this? And that is why showing this movie in Africa is very important at this point in time for the following reasons.
