The Biden administration must repudiate the shortsighted America First foreign policy of the previous administration by taking a humanitarian stand in sub-Saharan Africa. And his lawyers’ efforts to establish standing in the Rwandan courts by teaming up with local counsel have been blocked. The Biden administration should press the Rwandan government to act with the speed that Rusesabagina’s health demands. The America First doctrine was a surrender of so much of the moral authority the U.S. had built since it intervened in the European theater of World War II, a war America entered simply to help the continent rid itself of tyranny. Standing up for Rusesabagina and the people of Tigray will not bring Biden any strategic advantage.
