The two islands, named Thengar Char and Jaliyar Char [later renamed Bhashan Char], are located five kilometres away from the estuary of Meghna River and the Bay of Bengal, near Hatiya upazila of Noakhali. However, there seems to be a confusion regarding the identities of Thengar Char and Jaliyar Char. However in reality, development activities are being carried out in Jaliyar Char, which was later renamed Bhashan Char. Following the decision to rehabilitate the Rohingya there, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina renamed Jaliyar Char as Bhashan Char. The prime minister later renamed Jaliyar Char as Bhashan Char.
