A Dunedin sandwich shop has been granted official bragging rights over the best toastie in the country. Hungry Hobos and its ‘‘good old-fashioned comfort food’’ won this year’s Great New Zealand Toastie Takeover - reigning over 80 other entries. It was a combination of the Bat out of Hell toastie - made with meatloaf - and simple ingredients served with confidence that impressed them, the judges of the competition run by McClure’s Pickles said. Hungry Hobos owner Romeo Dowling-Mitchell, of Mornington, and his Bat Out of Hell sandwich - winner of the annual Great New Zealand Toastie Takeover. It also needed to contain cheese and McClure’s pickles.
