Bengal pain: taxes lag, spending leaps

Devadeep PurohitCalcutta: The Bengal government missed its own tax revenue target for 2017-18 by over Rs 5,000 crore, budget papers placed by finance minister Amit Mitra in the Assembly on Wednesday reveal. Mitra, for instance, explained how the GST affected the state's revenue collection. The budget papers peg Bengal's debt at Rs 3.95 lakh crore by the end of 2018-19. Such growth - captured by the GSDP in the debt ratio - is "good" for Mitra as the higher the denominator (GSDP), the lower the debt ratio. The shortfall may bother the state for sometime - Mitra said that the Centre owed the state Rs 850 crore on that account this year.
