“Our Cartoon President.” (Showtime)WELL BEFORE Comedy Central-turned-Netflix comedian Michelle Wolf took the lectern Saturday evening at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders and New York Times investigative reporter Maggie Haberman had already come into the sights of Showtime’s humor. “Can you believe the lying fake media invited me again to the White House correspondents’ dinner?” said Showtime’s animated take of President Trump (as voiced by Jeff Bergman) in a video short from the makers of “Our Cartoon President” that was shown to the thousands of WHCD attendees in the belly of the Washington Hilton. The cartoon’s Sarah Huckabee Sanders offers: “Sir, are you sure you don’t want me to go in your place? The press corps loves me and my Reese Witherspoon-like Southern charm.”[The harshest jokes from Michelle Wolf’s correspondents’ dinner speech]The fictional Trump, unlike the real president, decides to attend the event and “honor some great people.”Among them is Haberman, whom Trump serenades as he begins warbling: “Remember that lunch at the Trump Grill?”Fake Trump concludes by saying to the press corps: “I look forward to locking you all up in the coming years.”For the humor of “Our Cartoon President” to work, co-creator and “Late Show” executive producer Chris Licht told The Washington Post’s Comic Riffs in February, “It has to be based in some kind of reality.”See the full animated short here:Read more:On Stephen Colbert’s new Trump cartoon series, the president has shades of Homer Simpson
