Beekeeper investigated after discovery of 22 dead hives in AucklandJoseph Johnson/Stuff The owner of a colony of bees in Bethells is being investigated for having unregistered beehives. The organic beekeeper discovered two dead bee colonies in Auckland, near his Earthbound Honey business, that had to be tested for a fatal bacterial disease. It was still not known what killed the 22 hives after test results came back negative for the bacteria American Foulbrood (AFB). "Because 22 hives were dead, it would suggest that the hives were neglected and were not looked after properly." King said the owner of the sites was being investigated because the hives were unregistered.
