Beam Suntory, other beverage companies find that alcohol and bribes are not a good mix

A number of international beverage companies have run afoul of the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), paying millions to settle bribery charges. Beam Suntory agreed in July to pay $8 million to settle charges of Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) violations stemming from improper payments by Beam Suntory’s Indian subsidiary, Beam India, to government officials in that country. Anheuser-Busch InBev’s India-based joint venture subsidiaries allegedly paid bribes to Indian government officials to boost sales and production. The FCPA prohibits companies under US jurisdiction from paying inducements to foreign officials to obtain or retain business. The payments were made via Beam India, according to the SEC.
