Till March 2016 reportedly 3 Lakhs Indian farmers committed suicide trapped in debt and crop failure, 84% of these suicides are attributed directly to Monsanto Bt. There is a counter view to this alleged linking of Monsanto’s Bt cotton to farmers suicides in India as well. According to the study, the increase in suicides among Indian farmers is an unanticipated consequence of the bank reforms the country undertook since the early-1990s.
