WILSON, N.C. —October 3, 2023 — Barton College is excited to welcome North Carolina Poet Laureate Jaki Shelton Green as the featured speaker for the 2023 Joyce T. Boone Southern Authors Series Lecture this fall. About the Speaker —Jaki Shelton Green is the ninth Poet Laureate of North Carolina. Appointed in 2018, she was the first African American and third woman to be appointed as the North Carolina Poet Laureate. Literary Hall of Fame Inductee, a 2009 N.C. Piedmont Poet Laureate, and a 2003 recipient of the North Carolina Award for Literature. An enthusiastic advocate for students and alumni of Barton College, Boone believed in the mission of the small, private, liberal arts college.
