Assistant High Commission of Bangladesh in Tripura has observed the International Mother Language Day with due solemnity and fervour. State Finance Minister Bhanu Lal Saha paid floral tributes to the language martyrs as well. February 21 is observed as Language Martyrs Day for Bangladesh. On this day in 1952, the then Pakistan police shot dead several protesters who were demanding Bangla as the state language of the erstwhile East Pakistan. Several years later, in November 1999, the United Nations declared February 21 to be an International Mother Language Day.
