Bail for colonel in blast case

Shrikant Purohit New Delhi, Aug. 21: The Supreme Court today granted bail to Malegaon blast accused Prasad Shrikant Purohit, a lieutenant colonel, citing "contradictions" between the chargesheet of 2008 and the softer supplementary chargesheet filed by a central agency in 2015. On April 25 this year, Bombay High Court had granted bail to Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, a co-accused in the case, after the NIA exonerated her. It granted bail with several conditions, including a direction that Purohit cannot leave India and must surrender his passport to the trial court. Purohit had petitioned the apex court after being denied bail by the Mumbai trial court in October 2015 and Bombay High Court on April 25 this year. The court said the grant of bail "shall be no consideration for grant of bail to other accused" in the case, whose bail applications, if any, should be decided on merit.
