MIRI: A pioneering research project on rural road construction has begun in Miri to find a solution to the problems of rural roads in the interior. Prof Kuek said CMRI and JKR are looking at creating a bio-sandstone compound using a type of bacterial agent that can be used to construct rural roads. “The mixture, which is being experimented on by our team of researchers, may be the solution to the problems of the present bad rural road conditions in Sarawak and the rest of Borneo. The Pilot Plant is fully equipped to carry out culture collection, biomass separation, and formulation of the biocementing bacteria. The production of the biocementing bacteria is only one of the many projects that will be carried out in the Pilot Plant where Curtin Malaysia is assuming a key role in helping the state government develop Sarawak’s bioeconomy.
