This week, read true stories, romanticized histories and only slightly embarrassing memories of the objects that made school what it was. However, the most interesting quality that art and textbooks claim in tandem is the enhanced value each receive through previous ownership. That the price of a work of art is affected through its history of owners is rarely disputed. However, it may surprise some to learn that a textbook’s value can be drastically altered in the present semester by those who used it in the preceding years. To prove such a bold thesis, I would remind readers of the ink-stamped grid that appeared in the front of their high school textbooks.
