Baby nests could suffocate rather than soothe


The Fisher-Price Rock 'n Play, the subject of a US consumer warning and recall after a series of baby deaths which prompted concerns about baby "nests" generally. Sera Lilly, founder of Lilly & Co, which makes a range of soft-sided "nests," says that "questions around the safety of using baby pods, nests, cocoons, soft beds – call them what you will – do need to be addressed. "In fact when we were in our sampling stage, we approached a government agency about safety regulations, but were told there were none," she adds. Lilly also stresses that her products are only intended to be used under adult supervision, including when baby is sleeping. What New Zealand needs, Tanguay says, are safety regulations pertaining to infant beds like those that exist for wooden and travel cots, toys and baby walkers.
