The Sure Start Maternity Grant is paid to all new parents on universal credit - and families have six months to claim the support after their child is born. The payment is offered to both new parents, and those expecting twins or triplets for the first time, meaning some families can claim it twice. However, more support could be on its way thanks to a new trial in south Wales. The scheme, being piloted in the Swansea Bay University Health Board area for £115,000, aims to promote well-being and support parents. "We also hope these bundles will promote a more equal playing field for parents and their babies by reducing expenditure on newborn essentials.
