BOOK REVIEW: Flame and Song : A Memoir

By ABIGAIL ARUNGAMore by this AuthorBy Philippa Namutebi Kabali-KagwaThis descriptive memoir creates a world in extensive detail of a girl growing up in Kampala, Uganda, at a time when democracy was still fresh and new and there was still hope for a brand new and independent Africa in a way that makes you long for your own childhood. There are a many similarities with a Kenyan upbringing - wearing of uniforms to school, sneaking from home to play with the neighbours’ children, as well as immediately identifiable markers of a burgeoning country, such as unrivalled patriotism. Part of this book takes place in Kenya, starting at the point where the author travels to Nairobi for her secondary school education at the Kenya High School, when her family has to abruptly leave a precarious situation in Uganda. The Kenya she depicts is one of old, and brings back waves of memories for a time now lost. Interspersed with heartfelt poetry, Flame and Song is a story of a woman transforming through the many lands she at various points calls home.
