Police dispersed the protest using batons and water cannons around 11am on Saturday morning in front of the BNP headquarters in Dhaka’s Naya Paltan. The BNP activists retreated inside their offices and locked the gates while continuing to chant slogans. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir held a press conference inside the party offices condemning the police’s actions. “So we took action.”The BNP had applied for permission to hold a mass rally at the Suhrawardy Udyan or Naya Paltan on Feb 22, but had been denied by police. The police are continuing their attempts to detain BNP activists from the alleys near the party’s offices.
