At the 2020 Worldwide Developer Conference, BMW confirmed will become the first carmaker to allow an iPhone to function as a fully digital car key. You simply hold your phone near an NFC reader in your car (like the door handle) and confirm the action with Face ID or Touch ID. Eventually, BMW says you'll be able to just have your phone in the vicinity of the car, like in a bag on the passenger seat. Thanks to bespoke hardware on the iPhone and Apple Watch, encryption keys that make the phone or watch talk to the car stay on the actual device. You will need an iPhone XR, iPhone XS or newer and Apple Watch Series 5 or newer.
