NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) achieved its sixth straight election victory in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state Gujarat, but its thin margin of win may give it worries for the national elections in 2019. The party won 99 seats in the 182-member state assembly, just seven more than the 92 needed to form government. “We have set a record in the history of the BJP by winning consecutive assembly polls,” BJP vice president Shyam Jaju said on Monday. The election results showed impressive gains for the Congress in rural areas, while the BJP performed strongly in urban centres. The electorate in the state appears in the habit of changing government in every election, alternating between the Congress and the BJP.
