The new allegations made by the publisher based in the UK are expected to spark a diplomatic dispute between London and New Delhi at a time when Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, a practicing Hindu, is attempting to negotiate an agreement with India after Brexit. When ethnic tensions between newly arrived Hindus and already-established Muslims in Leicester erupted last summer, it hurt Britain’s reputation as a place where different races coexist peacefully. In India, where they were perceived as Muslims attacking Hindu residents, the riots between Muslim and Hindu youth that broke out after the Pakistan-India cricket match in late August also attracted attention from the worldwide media.
