A huge disclosure was made by the UK-based media outlet Daily Mail, which claimed that individuals associated with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his party “Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)” were to blame for instigating British Hindus to assault Muslim teenagers and for stoking tensions in Britain. The report stated that “there was evidence of BJP-linked activists using closed WhatsApp groups to encourage Hindu protesters to take to the streets.”The report did add a note of caution, stating that “this was only the most egregious example of Indian Hindu nationalists using private social media posts to interfere in the UK.”“So far, it’s mostly been local politics, with Modi and his BJP doing what they would do in Gujarat [Modi’s home state] to elect this or that local councilor.”However, it must be halted before it spreads to efforts to sway our country’s politics, the report added. The new allegations made by the publisher based in the UK are expected to spark a diplomatic dispute between London and New Delhi at a time when Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, a practicing Hindu, is attempting to negotiate an agreement with India after Brexit. When ethnic tensions between newly arrived Hindus and already-established Muslims in Leicester erupted last summer, it hurt Britain’s reputation as a place where different races coexist peacefully. In India, where they were perceived as Muslims attacking Hindu residents, the riots between Muslim and Hindu youth that broke out after the Pakistan-India cricket match in late August also attracted attention from the worldwide media.
