GUWAHATI: A day after AGP leader Prafulla Kumar Mahanta said religious persecution was no longer a problem in Bangladesh, BJP on Wednesday said the former chief minister was 'causing confusion' on the issue of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.The Bill, which seeks to grant citizenship to religious minorities from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan , is being examined by a parliamentary joint committee. BJP, on its part, has been trying to allay these fears by saying that the pressure will not be on Assam alone. "What steps did the government take to implement the Assam Accord when Mahanta was in power? BJP leaders went on to accuse Mahanta of causing confusion among the people by opposing the amendment.Despite AGP being a part of the BJP-led government in the state, Mahanta has been vocal about his opposition to the amendment bill. On Tuesday, Mahanta said the Indian government has not officially informed the Bangladesh government about the infiltration problem.
