The deceased, Joynal Abedin—who was from Islampur village—was the general secretary of Awami League's Jahangirnagar union unit of Sunamganj Sadar upazila. Sunamganj Sadar police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Shahidullah said: "We have recovered the weapons used in the incident, and Joynal's clothes that were drenched in blood." According to locals, the Awami League leader was extremely popular and was regarded as an honest person. Later, law enforcement took Joynal's body to Sunamganj Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
