I sat next to a Chinese wine collector at a dinner in Hong Kong last week and he showed me six emails from different wine merchants--from London, New York and Hong Kong--urging him to buy Bordeaux 2016 en primeur. Even from the supply side, it doesn't appear to make sense to buy 2016 Bordeaux en primeur--it was one of the more generous crops over the past 10 years. So why am I suggesting a list of 2016 wines to buy now? There is so little Petrus made, a fraction in volume compared with the first growths that one must buy it in the best vintages like 2016. Only 500 cases were produced in 2016 and this will be a collectors vintage with escalating prices in the future.
