One avalanche struck an army barrack in Sonamarg around 5.45am today. Army sources identified the dead officer as Major Amit Singh of the 115 battalion of the Territorial Army. The other avalanche hit Budugam village in Bandipore around 4.30am, burying alive four of a family as they slept. Officials said the area had received six to seven feet of snow, which had prompted them to issue an avalanche warning. Officials have forecast "widespread heavy snowfall" tomorrow and "fairly widespread to isolated rain/snow from January 27-28".
