Greyhound racing will be outlawed in Australia’s largest state after an inquiry found that almost 70,000 dogs were killed in the past 12 years because they were not fast enough. The premier of New South Wales, Mike Baird, said greyhound racing would end within the next year, describing a special commission report into the industry as “chilling, confronting and horrific”. The report found that up to 68,000 greyhounds, or almost half of all greyhounds bred to race, were slaughtered in the past 12 years because they were deemed uncompetitive.
