Aboriginal people make up the majority of the Northern Territory population and 94 per cent of juvenile inmates in the territory. Footage of the abuse of six Aboriginal boys in a juvenile detention centre sparked renewed criticism of Australia's treatment of Aboriginal people, or Aborigines, and their high imprisonment rate. Aboriginal people comprise just three per cent of Australia's population but make up 27 per cent of those in prison. A lawyer representing two of the boys said all six boys abused were of Aboriginal descent.
