A Palmerston North student will be breaking glass ceilings after winning a scholarship aimed at shaking up the engineering profession. Massey University student Sarah Lewis, 18, has become the first recipient of the Whanake scholarship for Māori female engineering students, an award trying to make the industry more diverse. Engineering company Beca's Palmerston North branch manager Patryjca​ Bonkowska​ said it was vital to encourage women from different cultural backgrounds into engineering. As a result, Coyle said Māori women were "completely under-represented" in the engineering profession.
