Various parts of the state have seen outraged Dalits coming on the streets and transport services have been disrupted. A statewide strike has been called against suspected right-wing vigilante assault on Dalits on January 1. Several Dalit — and Left voices — had gathered, calling for consolidation of Dalits against right-wing forces. Some vigilante forces had been making contrary noises that the celebrations were purportedly insulting the legacy of anticolonial nationalism.The Maharashtra administration should have arranged for sufficient forces on the spot. It is indisputable, however, that atrocities against Dalits had been a definitive feature in the Peshwa's regime.
