The tale of Minister of Democratic Institutions Maryam Monsef’s citizenship may be one of the more curious stories of the year. The thing is, as others have detailed at length, many people born in war zones aren’t sure of their exact birthdate, let alone location. There’s a certain wilful blindness among those who refuse to believe Monsef was unaware of the truth. Why is there still a loophole in Canadian immigration law that allows children born to parents outside Canada from 1977 to 1981 to lose their passports without warning, even if they’ve never held another citizenship? Under the current law, if you put down wrong information, even accidentally, you can lose your citizenship or passport.
