CALGARY—Three city councillors have a plan to save money with across-the-board cuts to “non-essential” services, sparing police, fire, 911 dispatch and public transit. Joe Magliocca, Sean Chu and Jeromy Farkas say there’s $50 million of savings to be found with a five per cent cut to every other city departments. But their proposal exempts the most expensive parts of Calgary’s budget, which together make up more than three-quarters of city spending. City council will talk about 2020 budget adjustments all next week after this year’s provincial budget hit Calgary hard. Councillors were already heading toward difficult decisions to balance out the tax share paid by homeowners and businesses.
